Master of None accurately captures the struggles of this generation

Master of None is a romantic comedy, that at times may be explicit, but usually has a good message behind its storyline.

This show is about a 30-year old man, named Dev, figuring out life as he goes. The main character, played by Aziz Ansari, co-creator and actor, is a first generation American who faces some troubles that come with being a part of a modern society may bring. Problems, such as maintaining his personal relationships, starting a family, and juggling his acting career, arise often.

This comedic series accurately demonstrates some of life’s intensely awkward moments in a subtle but hilarious way. For example, Dev accidentally kidnaps his girlfriend’s grandmother from a senior citizen home. We later come to realize that the grandma was very unhappy at the home and wants more fun in her life before she passes. The audience learns that it is important to go visit and spend time with older family members because it will make their life more enjoyable.

Master of None covers some serious topics in a way that makes the audience want to continue watching to see how the tough situations are handled. For example, Dev meets his girlfriend’s grandma. The grandma has been facing years of prejudice agism, and finds himself in a predicament.

“With funky title-cards, music and great comedy Master of None places one hand on our back and shows us the inequality in the world, whether it’s in sexism, racism or ageism,” according to beareviewsblog.wordpress.com.

The main character is surrounded with people who have an important purpose in his life. For Dev, advice is given and lessons are learned. The audience is also able to take away from the journeys that Dev faces because the content is so relatable.

The overall acting enhances the relatable factor. However, the acting of Dev’s parents, seem a bit awkward, even though that is the relationship between some parents and children, the acting still seems forced.

According to imbd.com, when the co-creator, Ansari, was casting for the parents of Dev, he was displeased with the auditionees. “Aziz needed to find 2 Indian people to play his parents in the show, but was not finding anyone that was exactly what he wanted, so he just used his real parents who are not actors.”
