Kanye, is it really “Facts?”
Kanye didn’t call Drake on his cell phone, but he definitely called him out. Drake and almost everyone whose name has been in the news lately.
On New Years Eve, three hours before the start of 2016, Kanye dropped a surprise track. The song really encompases everything that Kanye stands for: himself.
The song is conveniently named “Facts,” because anything that comes out of Kanye’s mouth must be true, right?
The song starts out with unnecessary autotune, which makes Kayne sound like his alter ego, Yeezus. Then Kanye jumps into insulting Drake, for who knows what reason. He also mentions that his show line is better, and that he’s basically the best of the best. Typical Kanye.
And that’s basically how the song progresses, without the autotune, of course. Kanye makes it clear that he’s waging war against Nike, and that he wants, no, needs, people to take sides. The song is also very similar to Drake and Future’s song “Jumpman,” which Kanye also disses multiple times.
“The flow that Kanye uses often in the song is lifted from the Drake and Future track. It’s a venture down an already-paved path by a man who has prided himself on — and gained our adoration by — doing the opposite,” Adam Fleisher, writer for MTV News, wrote.
Although the song focuses mostly on his disdain towards Nike, Drake also mentions Steve Harvey’s flub at the Ms. Universe pageant and Bill Cosby’s infamous troubles with the law.
Yeezus didn’t forget about his promise, however. His decision to run for president made yet another appearance in the song, reminding everyone that he was going to be “running the whole election.”
The song really does fall flat, especially when comparing it to Kanye’s previous releases. Dropping a new song on New Years Eve isn’t a first for him, he released “Only One” last year, and it was certified gold, selling over 500,000 copies.
To get a good laugh, “Facts” is the place to go. But it doesn’t showcase what Kanye can really do. This is definitely not his best work.
