MOD Pizza: An instant hit

There’s not much that’s better than a savory, creamy, homemade pizza after a long day. But who has the time to make it?

MOD Pizza, a fast food pizza restaurant, recently opened in Deer Park next to Chili’s, became a hit almost overnight. MOD is unique not because of the taste of their pizza, but because of the style.

“I like the feel of it,” Justin Shah, sophomore, said. “The idea of sort of making your own pizza is pretty nice.”

MOD is somewhat like the subway of pizza. You choose from a counter full of pizza toppings and tell them to put whatever you want on it. Then they put it in the oven, and about ten minutes later, they call your name and you go and get it.

MOD started in Seattle, but has grown all over the country the past few years, according to the MOD website. Since they first opened in 2008, they have turned their restaurant into “a place where you want to take your family, and where it feels like family.”

“The people that work there are pretty nice,” Shah said. “I like it because it is so casual.”

While waiting for my pizza, they man from behind the counter came up to me and handed me a pizza, saying, “We made an extra, and you look hungry, so you can have this.” He then saw my Lake Zurich shirt and we got into a conversation about the high school.

It says a lot about a restaurant when its staff is willing to walk around and spark conversations with customers.

On top of the good service, the pizza was delectable. I got a cheese pizza with pepperoni and balsamic glaze. I have only once had a better version of that pizza, and it wasn’t even in this country.

Although quite a nice restaurant, there are a few things that need improvements. Because each person has his own pizza, wait times can be long, and one family member may get his pizza well before another.

Besides the wait times, the service, food, and ambiance made eating there pleasurable. My only wish is that they expand to get more seating, because I am definitely going back for more.
