Avicii: new album lacks stylistic balance
Swedish Electronic Dance Music (EDM) artist Avicii is back with his new album Stories. And although he’s known for his work in EDM, it is possible that he has started to migrate from that genre and into others.
Avicii, who is well known for his folk-infused pop hits “Wake Me Up” and “Hey Brother,” reached audiences from EDM fans to Top 40 fans. With his new album, “Stories,” he broadens his audience and music style.
“Love it or hate it, you can’t deny that Avicii’s sound was instrumental to EDM reaching mainstream audiences. However, Stories doesn’t even boast such a stylistic balance. In this album, Avicii has all but abandoned electronic music – and what he’s replaced it with might be welcome if it were at least consistent, but with how many different genres he tried to fit into the effort, it comes across as the symptom of a musical identity crisis,” said John Cameron in a review on wegotthiscovered.com.
Although most of the songs were upbeat and lively, the inconsistency of musical style was almost distracting. From provoking extreme dancing to encouraging a relaxing nap, Stories was enjoyable for the most part, the musical style was inconsistent and distracting.
