Open House is beneficial for parents to attend
Open House, scheduled for September 11 at 7pm, is an opportunity for parents and teachers to meet and interact.
“I think it’s a great way for the parents to get an idea as to what they can expect from the classes right away,” Laura Fonte, social studies teacher, said.
Many teachers create some sort of presentation about the course’s subject matter. In the past, Fonte has shown a powerpoint highlighting key information about both her College Prep and Advanced Placement World History classes.
Not only is there a benefit of course overview for the parents, but parents interact with teachers to receive a sense of who the students are learning from.
“It’s also a great way for us to meet the parents. Unfortunately, we don’t get to know more about the parents and to speak to the parents directly until parent-teacher conferences, but at least what I think is helpful about open house is it gives the parents an idea what they can expect from their child’s day,” Fonte said. “It also puts faces to the names for us, and makes us not seem like these foreign figures.”
The school’s increased integration of technology may have a hand in making this year’s open house varied from previous years.
“This year may be different because we have Canvas,” Fonte said. “Instead of doing a powerpoint I might maybe show them what we’re doing on Canvas and the use of technology, especially with the freshmen I have and the use of the iPads.”
With so much to cover, Fonte dislikes how short of a time slot teachers have. “Ten minutes just doesn’t seem like enough.”
