Hard working, determined, strong, and passionate are all viable adjectives that describe the women who created a respectable name for women. Skimpy, hot, exposed, revealing, easy are all viable adjectives that describe the current generation of girls. Women had to work hard in order to be looked at as equal to men, yet the current generation of girls is throwing that hard work away.
It is a testament to the power of institutional sexism that women, despite making up 51 percent of the population, are a minority group, according to the article All about Women’s Rights Issues by Tom Head. This is changing, but not fast enough. In fact, our culture seems to be moving backwards at times, not letting of the theories that present women as irrational and illogical, and create laws that exercise lurid control over women’s bodies.
The current generation of girls has grown up with media and a constant push to be “hot” or “sexy” for men, created the image of women as an object. The fact that Halloween has turned into girls dressing up provocatively, and having that social expectation, is obnoxious. This expectation of girls dressing skimpy and looking like street walkers objectifies women as a whole.
“I think that girls choose to dress a certain way, so for Halloween that’s a choice that they’re making. But I also think that women should not just accept what companies and vendors offer for clothing and styles,” Laura Stanton, English and reading teacher, said.
Although there are women and girls whom are respectable and intelligent people, especially the women who hold leadership positions and are an inspiration, individuals cause the movement backwards for all women. It is the girls at clubs and parties or being objective that can create and destroy the image of women as a whole
Studies from social psychologists have determined that more than 25 percent of young women agree to sexual intercourse within the first week of dating, according to Ask Men’s website.
The mentality of teenagers today is all about being intoxicated and having relations with the opposite sex with no meaningful connection to them at all. Media has helped portray this mentality and present women as objects to men with a lack of self-respect.
It took women 165 years to get to where they are today, and women still do not receive equal pay, have never been president or vice president, and hold fewer leadership positions than men.
Most people would not call a father a “working dad,” but it is normal to call a mother a “working mom.” America continues to keep a mindset of the working dad and thoughtless stay at home mom, which is installed in children today.
Girls need to prove that as women we deserve equal treatment and should not be seen as an object to men. There is no reason girls should feel they have to dress a certain way to appease men, and there is no shame in being a strong intelligent person and an avid member of society. Women are being objectified more than ever due to the actions of individuals rather than women as a whole. It is not right that the current generation of women is moving women backwards, when so much work was put into the movement forwards.
