Violent video games, although fun and stress relieving can lead to aggressive teenage behavior. As a teen feeling lost and looking for an escape and a way to relax is completely normal. But young as young kids we are taught ‘violence is never the answer’ which is a lesson people need to continue to teach to preach.
Violent entertainment is seen in T.V. shows, movies, and now video games. Audiences are less likely to engage in violent activity after watching a television show or a movie because the viewing is passive. If a player plays a video game, they are actively participating in the entertainment. This creates an illusion that violent behavior is okay.
Players of these games typically identify with a violent character in the game. The player is told who to kill, how to use a gun and run from the cops. The video games glamorize violence. When violent actions take place in the game, players are awarded for their actions. For example, when a player gets a ‘kill shot’, the player is awarded points and their statistics go up.
Aggressive behavior is a direct result from playing these games but can be avoided. If a parent notices their child becoming violent verbally or physically they shouldn’t ignore the changed behavior. Parents don’t have to completely eliminate video games from the house hold but simply limit playing time and by not installing game consoles in their child’s bedroom.
