Cafeteria should offer greater variety
Our school is filled with a diversity of students. This diversity comes from our wide range of interests and skills, between math, drama, art, writing, athletics, or science.
Another difference between students, however, lies in our dietary choices.
Lake Zurich High School offers a variety of lunch choices: hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, calzones, and pizza. There is a food that all these items have in common–wheat. This is a problem for those with celiac, an allergy to gluten, or those who have made the decision to cut wheat from their diets.
The issue with the lack of food options has increased in recent years. According to cdc.org, the amount of children with food allergies has increased 18% from 1997 to 2007.
A large sum of students at LZHS either suffer from a food allergy or have made a decision to avoid certain foods such as gluten, meat, or any animal products. 1 in every 13 adolescents have a food allergy, according to foodallergy.org.
If the school cafeteria is in place to provide lunch meals for its students, it should provide a greater selection of food for those who are celiac, lactose intolerant, vegan, or any of the great selection of food needs.
