The comedy series that will make you crack up, cry, and maybe cringe a little. This show is different from any other sitcoms premiering this year because it is honest, real, and will make you think about your own love life and self-worth, in a good way. The Mindy Project is a 30minute romantic comedy sitcom and the second season premiering tonight at 8:30pm on FOX.
This series is not only loved by fans but by critics as well. “”Mindy” is not just soulful and amusing. It takes a genre full of clichés, adds something fresh and spins it into gold,” Nancy Dewolf Smith, Wall Street Journal.
The show follows the life of a self-proclaimed chubby, mid-thirties Indian doctor. Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling), an OB/GYN who runs a practice in New York City with three other doctors and the nursing staff. The show revolves around Mindy in her pursuit to have an awesome job, love in her life, and keep updated on the latest fashion trends. After Dr. Shulmen (head of the practice) retires, Dr. Reed, Dr. Castellano, and Dr. Lahiri are left in charge of the practice, but is not easy considering they each have different perceptions on how to run their new business.
Despite the setting of the show coming off like a ‘chick flick’ this show is for anyone. Viewers will love ‘Mindy’ because everyone can relate to her and the cast of characters that follow. Whether you’re skinny, bigger, tall, short gay or straight you will fall in love with this show because ‘Mindy’ makes us all laugh at ourselves.
Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling): Lahiri is a single doctor trying to find love in the Big Apple while still keeping all her doctor responsibilities in check. She obsessively watches romantic comedies as a way to help her own love life. Lahiri is a sucker for love whether, it be her own or seeing someone else’s budding relationship on the subway. She especially loves seeing the scenes from movies play out in real life. She is constantly dating new men, including a cocaine addict, prostitute and a drug dealer, but none of them seal the deal for her, her current boyfriend is a minister. However their relationship gets fuzzy as the show continues. Lahiri will do anything to be the perfect woman for the guy she is with, whether that be losing weight, pretending to do something she likes or being religious she will do it. She often spends time with her best friend Gwen (Anna Camp), who comes in handy after Mindy gets dumped or dumps one of her boyfriends.
Despite her bad moments and her bad boyfriends, Lahiri is a happy go lucky woman. She carries a spunky pro-woman attitude with her wherever she goes. She does not mind spending money on great fashion, appreciates great food, and is not afraid to eat as much as she wants.
Lahiri is a people pleaser. She will buy refreshments for small meetings that are held in the practice; she will support her brother in his ‘rap’ career, and once bought her mugger a sport coat so he could go on job interviews to better his life. She wants to feel loved and accepted and gets really sad when she does not.
Even with life’s uncommon disappointments Lahiri remains to be a great OB/GYN. She is faithful to her clients and her co-workers.
Dr. Danny Castellano (Chris Messina): Castellano is a middle-aged, bitter, divorced man who uses sarcasm as a way to get through the day. His former wife cheated on him, causing him to stay away from love for some time. Castellano eventually gets back into the dating game, but he has a hard time being charming and romantic, disappointing some of his dates.
Castellano has two objectives at work: to work and to annoy Lahiri. He is always criticizing and judging her decisions, whether it is the men she dates or her professional life, he has a comment. Not only does he hate on Lahiri, but the rest of the practice too. Castellano holds no filter when it comes to his employees. Whether a co-worker comes in late, talks about their social life or is off task for just a second he will scrutinize them.
But Castellano is not all bad as viewers will see towards the end of the first season. He proves he has a heart and does care about his co-workers.
Dr. Jeremy Reed (Ed Weeks): Reed is also single and loves the bachelor lifestyle. He is constantly meeting new ladies for romance. Reed is a good looking, smart man with a charming British accent and has no problem finding new woman. Despite his great looks, he often feels like the black sheep in his family but finds peace with his practice.
Despite the good looks Reed is intimidated when it comes to leadership situations at the practice. Reed was told to fire the nurse but being too afraid of the nurse’s situation he instead took her out for the day. When the practice is in an overwhelming situation Reed is known to hide out in his office.
His love for his career and the people he works with is strong. Reed has a positive attitude on life and sets the bar high for himself.
Nurse Morgan Tookers- (Ike Barinhotlz): Tookers finds his way into the practice after fixing Lahiri’s broken nose when she got punched in the face by the previous nurse. He is single and has trouble properly hitting on women. Tookers an ex-con who did jail time stealing cars, applies to become the new nurse at the practice and was luckily accepted due to his fast response when Lahiri was punched in nose. He has turned his troubled life around by becoming a nurse. To prove to his co-workers that he has stopped his negative lifestyle, he shows the doctors his tattoo which reads “No More Stealing Cars” on his stomach.
His jail time experience helps him give advice to the rest of the practice, especially coming in handy when the practice goes to an all female prison for free checkups. Unfortunately, the team does not listen to the advice; therefore the situation gets messy.
Despite his outer toughness, Tookers’s first love is the practice. He is a kind and caring man who loves his co-workers, even when they do not appreciate him.
