Double Trouble

Twin brothers Brian and Kyle Griffith, junior cross country and track runners, have been playing the same sports and taking part in the same activities for as long as they can remember. So have twin sisters Lauren and Allison O’Hara, sophomore bowlers. They are siblings, 2 teammates, and competitors. Here are their stories.

Q: How is your relationship with your brother different from your relationship with your teammates?
Kyle: I think it’s different because it’s more competitive.  I mean I want to beat him more than anyone else.  I don’t know if that sounds bad but like we have almost the same abilities I really want to beat him in races and stuff.
Brian: I think we get more competitive with each other than with our teammates, but also we push each other harder when we train because we know we want to be better than each other.

Q: How is your relationship with your brother the same as your relationship with your teammates?
Kyle: I think we all share one common goal and I think that’s what brings us together.
Brian: I’d say probably work ethic, but in the end we’re still teammates just like any other teammates working hard to achieve the same goal.

Q: What do you like about playing the same sport as your brother?
Kyle:I think it’s fun and I think we get to spend more time with each other and it’s good competing with him because he forces me to become better and I think we work together to become better.
Brian: I think we push each other, so I think it brings out the best in both of us.

Q: Some people say twins think alike, do you think this is true?
Kyle:Yeah, I would have to say so because we have pretty similar personalities, and I feel like we’re both really competitive and we want to win and we also both train hard, too.
Brian:I would say for sure.  I think a lot of times we do have the same ideas going into things.

Q: Have you and your brother ever switched places before?
Kyle: Yeah, one time in fifth grade we switched classes for a day.  It was kinda fun, but someone told on us and I don’t know why.
Brian: Yeah in fifth grade we switched classes and all the students noticed, but it took the teachers a little bit to realize what was going on.

Q: Do people ever mix you guys up or call the wrong name in a race?
Kyle: Yeah, people do that all the time.  I guess it’s hard to differentiate us because we have the same uniform on, but I’m so used to it, so I just respond to both names.

Q: What’s it like growing up as a twin?
Kyle: I don’t know. I feel like we just do everything together.  I feel like it’s kinda different like I don’t even really know kinda what it feels like to not grow up with a twin, but there’s always someone to do something with and it’s a lot of fun.
Brian: It’s interesting I don’t know because for me it seems normal but i guess it would seem weird for me to grow up without a twin who does the same stuff as you.  It’s like a brother who’s the same age as you.  I think there is a closer bond tho with twin brothers than normal brothers though because you do spend so much time with them it’s hard to avoid that being the same age and being into the same things.

Q: Do you and your twin get along?
Kyle: Yeah, I’d say most of the time we get along.  Sometimes we don’t but I’d say a majority of the time we do.
Brian: Yeah most of the time.

Q: Do you think you or your brother is better at running?
Kyle: I think I’m better because in these next couple races I feel like I can beat him.
Brian: I would have to say myself, because my times are better, but I want to see what he says for that.

Q: What are the advantages of competing against your twin?
Kyle: I want to beat him every single time, but i don’t think I’d be where I’m at today if my brother didn’t run with me.  Like sometimes I don’t feel like waking up to go to a practice, or if it’s like a captain’s practice, and I feel like it’s an extra push like he’ll tell me we gotta go or whatever
Brian: I’d say it’s good to have someone to compare yourself to because we have the same body build so hard work shows when you’re next to someone who’s almost physically the same as you.and sometimes I don’t feel like going, but he still pushes me.

Q: What are the disadvantages of competing against your twin?
Kyle: We both can’t win I guess.  Someone has to not do as well as the other on a certain day.
Brian: Sometimes it can get too competitive so there could be disagreements or fights.

Q: What sports do you and your sister play?
Allison: Bowling and soccer
Lauren: Bowling and soccer outside of school

Q: How is your relationship with your sister different from your relationship with your teammates?
Allison: We’re definitely more competitive with each other, but we work together more.
Lauren: We always help each other practice so we’re closer than our other teammates

Q: How is your relationship with your sister the same as your relationship with your teammates?
Allison: We always root for each other and try to help each other feel the best we can
Lauren:  We always cheer each other on and always are there for each other

Q: What do you like about playing the same sport as your sister?
Allison: We can practice together after school and stuff so we can both get better
Lauren: Help each other out when one is not doing that good or something

Q: What do you not like about playing the same sport as your sister?
Allsion: Always being compared to each other I guess
Lauren: Everybody finds out who’s better and who’s worse, it’s really comparing

Q: Some people say twin think alike, do you think this is true?
Allison: Yeah for us definitely because we’re so alike and we do a lot of stuff together
Lauren: Yeah

Q: Have you and your sister ever switched places before?
Allison: Yeah we switched classrooms once in fifth grade.  The students didn’t really notice except a few of our friends who we told so they wouldn’t say anything if they knew our differences and stuff, and the teachers found out like halfway through the period
Lauren: Yeah we did in like fifth grade i think there are a few kids in the class who kind of knew what we were doing but the teachers didn’t really notice

Q: What’s it like competing against your sister all the time?
Allison: Were more competitive with each other so we try to do better than the other one
Lauren: It’s kind of annoying because everyone’s always comparing you

Q: Do people ever mix you guys up or call the wrong name in a meet?
Allision: Yeah people do that all the time.  In bowling they always guess a name and we end up just like going with it
Lauren: Yeah all the time

Q: What’s it like growing up as a twin?
Allison: You always have someone to hang out with so you’re never really alone
Lauren: Not many people know who you are they just call you twin or O’Hara

Q: Do you think you or your sister is better at running?
Allison: It depends because sometimes I’m better and sometimes she’s better it just depends on the day
Lauren: We’re pretty similar we switch off who does better each day

Q: What are the advantages of competing against your twin?
Allison: You always strive to be better than the other one so you have bragging rights
Lauren: Well, it’s really sad when you do worse than the other one.

Q: What are the disadvantages of competing against your twin?
Allison: Being compared to each other and when one does better than the other it’s just kind of depressing
Lauren: If the other one is doing better you kind of lose your confidencelaurenandallison web Griffiths web
