The boys’ tennis team starts off their season with an all new lineup, which frightens some players.
“Usually in sports movies, they start off bad and get better,” Philip Neff, sophomore doubles player, said. “We start off bad and stay that way. We’re a sports movie in progress.”
However, new players on the team mean change, new opportunity, and hope for improvement.
“Nine seniors graduated last year, so a lot of people who were on JV last year moved up,” Roberto Guagnelli, sophomore, said. “I think it’s going to be good because it’s like a fresh start. I feel like those new people will get a chance to improve and to win some matches and prove themselves good tennis players.”
Tennis is a unique sport, according to Guagnelli, because of its dual nature.
“We work individually or with a partner, so we’re separate,” Guagnelli said. “But at the end of the day, we are working for the team.”
The team has played two matches and a tournament as of press time, and has a 1-1 record.
“It actually went really well,” Guagnelli said. “We weren’t sure about our whole lineup because it was very strong last year. We weren’t sure everyone was gonna click, but so far it’s been really good. In some areas, even better than last year.”
