Wrestling team finishes fourth at tournament
The wrestling team finished fourth this weekend at their Saturday tournament at Wheeling, with three boys qualifying for the championship match.
Joey Stutzman, freshman, Josh Spiwak, senior, and Peter Maretis, senior, all made it to the championship match. Additionally, multiple wrestlers placed third, including Tommy Clancy, senior, Max Brummel, senior, and Pete Baldaccini, senior. The team competed in their meet Saturday morning, with little rest after their previous match on Friday.
“From [the match] Friday night, we made a huge improvement,” Maretis said. “Wrestling is a sport where it’s all mental. You have to remain focused and believe in yourself, as an individual and as a team.”
Maretis said he believes the team has been improving throughout the season, and that this weekend fit that pattern.
“I think we are making improvements each weekend, preparing for regionals,” Maretis said.
He is pleased with his achievement on Saturday, and thinks he’s doing better this year.
“I think as a whole, the season is a huge growing process for me,” Maretis said. “It’s my first year as a varsity wrestler, and it’s a major shift from the levels I’ve wrestled at in the past.”
The wrestlers will compete in their next matches this Friday evening and Saturday morning.
