Boys’ soccer is kicking it up a notch this season. The team has set many goals, and they hope their goals will bring them to the playoffs.
The team’s record is six wins, nine losses, and four ties. According to Michael Schmitz, head varsity coach, the team wishes to improve their record before the conference game.
“We want [our record] to be better. We’ve had a lot of close games. Eight out of our nine losses are by one goal, and those are games that you’d like to win. I think we’ve had chances to win, but sometimes things don’t go your way so we’re just going to try to finish strong,” Schmitz said. “We’ve got a couple conference games left and we’ll use those to get us ready for the playoffs.”
According to Matt Montemayor, senior captain, the team is hopeful that they will make it far in the playoffs.
“We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’re pretty hopeful for playoffs. When we’re on our game we’re really good. If we keep playing like we’re playing, we can make a run in the playoffs so we’ll see how it goes,” Montemayor said.
Schmitz agrees that the team has the ability to make it to the playoffs.
“We would like to [make it far in the playoffs]. I think we have the potential to. When we play well we can compete with anybody. Once you win that first [game] you can worry about the second one, and so on, and so on,” Schmitz said.
Montemayor believes that the team has potential in the playoffs because they are achieving the goals they made in the beginning of the season.
“We made a big list of goals. We wanted to score at least one goal every game, work hard in every game, and practice how you play. The team has been doing a good job of working hard in practice and it’s paying off on the field,” Montemayor said.
The team has scored at least one goal in every game they have played except one.
“One of the things we talked about was being a good offensive team, and we’re able to put the ball in the back of the net, so that’s always exciting,” Schmitz said.
In addition the achieving goals, Montemayor says team bonding benefits the team.
“At the beginning of the year, we go on an overnight trip and we stay there for one night and room together. It’s a lot of fun and it’s a good way to get to know each other,” Montemayor said. “We also have team dinners, and that really helps.”
The team hopes their team bonding along with their goals will help them come together and succeed in their postseason games.
“We’re going to take it one game at a time,” Schmitz said. “Whatever [game] is in front of us we’ll try and deal with that. We think we’re playing well at the right time of the season.”
