The Top Bear show, an event for exceptional seniors to show off their talents, will be happening on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
Run by the seniors in Poms, the Top Bear show presents 12 male seniors who get a chance to show off their talents. Then the top five are picked by the judges and asked to make a speech and answer a random question. The top five are voted on based on how well their performance done was and often bears attempt to make their talent memorable.
“When it comes to talent, we have some students who will perform their true talent, like if they sing or play the piano or play an instrument, but sometimes we have students, they’re allowed to do it with another group,” Theresa Jolie, Poms coach, said. “So they might pick to do something that is where they’re lip syncing, something that comes from a movie, or they might do something that’s totally out of their realm, like ribbon dancing.”
To select the the seniors who will compete for Top Bear, the Poms team picked around 30 students as nominees for top bear. Afterwards, students narrowed it down to the top 12 via voting. However, according to Tyler Ulbert, senior and Top Bear nominee, people can ask to be nominated or be nominated by the general student population.
“[Nomination] is a very fluid process, the [Poms team] creates a list of names who they might think would be a good fit for the show,” Ulbert said. “They vote those people in that process, but that isn’t how I kind of went. I was not nominated, but then I asked the Poms squad about [joining]. So, it’s a very open process.”
According to Jolie, this event has fully filled the PAC before and is well loved by the community.
“It’s giving kids just an opportunity to be on stage and do something that they haven’t done before,” Jolie said. “So, it’s not necessarily a serious event, but it’s a fun event. There can be some real poignant moments and some awesome moments like watching the show.”
According to Ulbert, this show is a very relaxed and noncompetitive show.
“We’re all just here to have a good time,” Ulbert said. “It’s not supposed to be about the competition. I think it’s about just having fun, a bunch of senior guys putting on this goofy show that someone happens to win.”
According to Ulbert, this event is meant to be a fun event to celebrate the seniors. This event has been a tradition for 26 years and Jolie plans to continue it.
“I just feel like it’s been a really fun tradition, in a nice way to see high school age students at their best,” Jolie said. “I think we need to continue that in schools these days, because there’s a lot of pressure academically on students, and a lot of times students are kind of set in their own groups. This is a fun event that brings people together to watch something and do something at school.”
