This year, the US Department of Education (ED) recognized Lake Zurich High School and Middle School North as 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools (NBRS) Program “recognizes outstanding public and non-public elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall high academic achievement or success in closing the achievement gap among diverse groups of students,” according to their website.
LZHS was honored by the NBRS Program as an “Exemplary High Performing School,” which is a title given to schools that score in the top 15% on state assessments in English and mathematics.
“Lake Zurich High School is an academically excellent school,” John Walsh, principal, said. “If we look at our standardized test scores over the past years, we are consistently ranked in the top 25 of all non-selective Illinois Public High Schools. But it goes beyond our academics. Our theater program is outstanding,, our music program is second to none, and our athletics are one of the best in the state.”
According to the ED, schools recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools may attract business partners, financial assistance, volunteers, and applications, as well as having the potential to inspire students.
“It is an honor for Lake Zurich High School to be awarded the Blue Ribbon Award,” Walsh said. “Staff, students, and the larger community deserve this award after many years of hard work. […] I always knew how great Lake Zurich High School is; now the entire nation knows.”
