A brand new club at LZHS will explore the cuisine, art, and traditions of Polish culture.
The Polish Club, which was founded by Adriana Solarska, sophomore, will focus on teaching and celebrating Polish culture at LZHS.
“I know that there’s a pretty big Polish community at our school, so I wanted to create a space where people could come together to celebrate Polish traditions,” Solarska said. “I want to make sure [that both] people of Polish heritage and [non-Polish] people who are just interested [can learn] about Polish culture.”
Members of the club will oversee Polish holidays, try out Polish food, and raise funds for charities such as the ‘You Can Be My Angel’ Foundation, a Polish charity organization that raises money for children afflicted with cancer. Solarska plans on raising money through activities based on Polish traditions, such as Smigus-dyngus, an Easter Monday tradition where people, usually children, engage in water fights.
“We would [have] a water balloon fight, which people can put money [into] to have fun and have that celebration,” Solarska said.
The club, which will begin meeting this month and has over 19 students already signed up, is not just for students with a Polish background, but also for non-Polish students who may be looking to broaden their cultural horizons.
“I am not Polish, but I am interested in learning about other cultures,” Michelle Emerick, Hub Specialist and Polish Club Sponsor, said. “I think it’s important for people to learn about different cultures, just to [learn] what other people do.”
The club is planning on meeting sometime this month, preferably during World Language Week, which will take place the week before spring break and celebrate foreign languages at LZHS.
