Some people have to make the regulations for every sport students play, and LZHS’ very own Athletic Director is part of that team, a committee of principals and athletic directors from all over the state who meet to help decide rules for the state athletics programs.

Rolly Vazquez, athletic director, was re-elected for his second three-year term on the IHSA Legislative Committee. Vazquez is excited to have the opportunity to continue to serve his community, he said. He feels his work with the committee is important.

“When someone nominates you, they feel you are the representative of the area and you would be helpful to them,” Vazquez said. “It’s nice to have people that are involved that are able to go down and get the information that’s at hand and to be able to share it with our district. The people who have questions call me and I can answer those questions about the proposals.”

He also answers questions for people outside the district and appreciates the perspective that this positions gives him, he said.

“You read proposals sometimes and you may understand it one way where others don’t,” Vazquez said. “Things are very different and sometimes there might be a proposal that will affect northern Illinois schools very differently than it will down [south. I enjoy] being able to inform them and discuss and get them to understand why this proposal came about because this is how it affects them down there.”

Vazquez’s role in this committee has not escaped notice at the high school.

“I’m very excited for him, and it’s a good thing for Lake Zurich High School,” Kent Nightlinger, principal, said. “It gives us an opportunity to have someone sitting in the legislative committee meetings firsthand. Hopefully our opinions and thoughts on issues can have immediate response.”
