Football bounces back with big win over Waukegan
The Bears claimed a 42-0 victory over the Waukegan Bulldogs on Saturday, bringing their record to 2-1 after a tough loss at Montini last Friday.
“The one thing that we harped on last week to prepare for against Waukegan was to finish,” Derrick Juarez, senior outside linebacker, said. “Against Montini, we were up 7-6 going into the the third quarter and we should have finished it that way.”
Finishing did not seem to be an issue against the Bulldogs as the Bears managed to score five rushing touchdowns and one off of a pass to earn the forty two point victory. While it was a strong win, Ryan McGeever, senior inside linebacker, still sees room for growth.
“We needed to improve [after Montini], so we focused on getting better because we still are not where we want to be yet,” McGeever said. “The best part of the team’s performance was getting the win, and that’s what we want to continue to do.”
The win came from both an explosive rushing game and a defensive shutout, but Juarez agrees that the team still has work to do.
“Honestly, we still didn’t play all the way to our potential,” Juarez said. “The coaches will work us, as always, to get better, and prepare us for tough competition. We can never be satisfied, and we need continue pushing ourselves so that we can prove all the talk and walk the walk.”
Next week, the Bears will travel to Zion Benton, where McGeever is confident the team will fix some of their previous mistakes.
“We’ll be ready to play, and we expect this game to be our best one yet.”
