Seniors get a change of clothes

The school approved senior shirt has the LZHS paw print on the front and Seniors 16 on the back. The Deans have forbid the traditional, inappropriate senior jerseys.

We almost made it. Two more weeks of school left. But only one if you’re a senior. And, if you’re a lucky senior, you only have to come for one more day.

Senior exams start Monday and seniors are expected at graduation rehearsal Friday. But if seniors don’t follow the rules, they may not be walking at graduation, according to Eric Hamilton, assistant principal for curriculum and instruction.

Earlier this week, seniors received two email saying, among other things, that seniors wearing the inappropriate senior shirts/jerseys will be sent to the dean’s office and required to change into a school-approved shirt purchased by the Senior Class Board.

“We are taking another positive step forward in the trying to do away with the inappropriate t-shirts the seniors have been accustomed to wearing on their last day,” according to one of the email sent out to seniors. “If a student is seen with an inappropriate shirt on, they will be asked to remove the shirt, not just turn it around.  If they do not have an appropriate shirt to wear they can be sent to the Dean’s office for an appropriate shirt.”

Although all the new rules are implemented to create a safer learning environment, some students are not happy.

“The senior shirts aren’t the classiest tradition, and I can see why admin is against it,” Kaitlin Mitchell, senior, said. “However, of all the meaningless pranks we could do, this tradition doesn’t hurt anyone and it brings the school together in a silly way. Personally, I think we have bigger problems, such as the rat infestation by the front entrance.”

Some seniors are upset that they payed $23 dollars for a shirt they won’t be able to wear and are upset that the LZHS administration is involving themselves in seniors’ end-of-the-year activities. Along with not being able to wear their shirts, the Class of 2016 is not signing the wall and were warned about consequences for any senior pranks, according to Mitchell.

The school’s stance on pranks follows last year’s senior prank that caused a long and annoying traffic jam on Church Street.

Although the senior class was warned about the pranks, they still held a beach party in the senior lot on the morning of May 19.
