NHS to donate school supplies and books to District 54 in Schaumburg
“There are different teams for [National Honors Society (NHS)] and our team, the purple team, is combining with the brown team to do a school supply and book drive,” Sydney Mathis, senior, said.
All the materials are going to a less fortunate district, District 54 in Schaumburg, where an LZ alumi works.
“District 54 isn’t as fortunate as we are when it comes to funding, and we want to help the teachers expand their personal libraries within their classrooms, since a lot of them aren’t able to do that themselves,” McKenna Winkelman, senior chair for the drive, said.
Despite the minimum hours required for NHS, Winkelman is not interested the drive just for the hours.
“I was really fortunate. I grew up in great classrooms where there was a lot of supplies, and it’s awful that some people don’t get that opportunity. I want to make a difference here and wherever I can,” Winkelman said.
Although not required, Winkelman encourages everyone to look through their house and donate, anything that fits the requirements.
“Please consider going through your stuff over the weekend. If you see a book that you don’t read anymore but you love it, and think somebody else would love it too, donate it,” Winkelman said. “I think those made the biggest difference for me. It’s why I love reading so much now.”
The drive is from March 17-23. Collections will be in the lunchroom and all English classes. School supplies should be new or lightly used and books should be for K-8.
