War veterans visit LZHS for Awareness
Salute, a non for profit organization that raises awareness of veterans who have been hurt either during the war or after. The event will take place November 4th in the PAC.
“My main goal is for students to understand that there are always going to be hardships, difficulties, and obstacles in one’s life,” Meghan Reynolds, English teacher, said. “I want students to understand that things are going to happen, but you have to have the confidence and motivation, and with the support of others you can get through it. These people have been through so much and yet they are still together and they’re still families. Basically, obstacles can be overcome and students can have a positive outlook on life.”
Salute is a non for profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness about the emotional, physical, and mental struggles that veterans might have, but also to help support them when they return, according to Reynolds.
“One of the families coming in is a Lake Zurich graduate and a roadside bomb basically blew up the vehicle that he was traveling in and left him with shrapnel in his shoulders and neck.” Reynolds said. “He had to have many surgeries, and Salute helped the family financially and helped them move back to Chicago to be with their family.”
Salute is based in Arlington Heights and has yet to reach out to the Lake Zurich community. Reynold’s hope is to raise awareness for this organization and would like to raise funds to help veterans in need of support.
Students are to fill out a field trip form and a form signed by a parent or guardian to attend the event.
