Seniors to celebrate National College Decision Day

Millions of high schoolers will be deciding their futures on May 1. Known as National College Decision Day, May 1 is the deadline to commit to a college. To acknowledge the monumental day, LZHS encourages seniors to celebrate.

“It is a big day and definitely something to advertise,” Carl Krause, college and career counselor, said. “The seniors get involved, wear their gear, get little gifts funded by Bear Boosters, and get treats from [family and consumer science teacher] [Marie] Baker’s class. We put a huge map on display and seniors get to put their name and school on the map. I think the younger kids also become excited and can’t wait to do it themselves in the future. Then we get the teachers involved and they wear clothes from their college. It is definitely a fun day every year for the whole school.”

Senior D.J. Smith said he also thinks the Decision Day celebration is an event everyone can enjoy.

“The day makes college seem more of a big deal. As a senior you are proud and that decision shows what you have done and what you will continue to do with your education,” Smith said. “It is also cool for everyone else to see how we all start in Lake Zurich, one small location, and branch out across the country or even across the world.”

This Friday will be the third time LZHS will have the event, and Krause said he hopes to have more students participate on the day.

“I knew other schools that did something similar for Decision Day, and it is nothing but a fun day,” Krause said. “Most of the seniors participate in it, it has never been one hundred percent, but I hope more people every year join in on the fun. It is just an awesome day for everyone to see where students are taking that next step in their life.”
