Flames consumed a car in the senior parking lot Thursday afternoon causing damage to multiple surrounding cars.

Ryan Rubenstein, Assistant Principal for Student Activities and Facilities, said the fire, that started around 2:00pm, was extinguished about 10 minutes after it had been burning. Also, students were not allowed to leave the school and were told to remain inside the building while the fire was being extinguished.

“The Fire Department was called and each of the students whose cars were affected were contacted and brought outside to speak with me and the police department,” Rubenstein said. “Thankfully no one was hurt, but there was damage to a few cars.”

The car that had caught fire was taken away by a tow truck around 3:15pm.

Kelly Beigl, junior, was in her eighth period Spanish class when she received the news about her car.

“I was looking out the window in my class and I was like ‘wow, that car is super close to where I parked,’” Beigl said. “Then Ms. Pikul walked into our class and asked me to come with her and bring my things. I knew almost immediately that something had to have happened.”

Luckly, Beigl’s car was not damaged and the car is still in good driving condition. Her car was parked with the front bumper facing the flaming car’s front bumper and she said “the car kinda looks like a marshmallow that got slightly toasted” and that she is glad that everyone is okay.
