Police Explorers to host 5k
Local police explorers are holding a 5k race on May 10 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their post.
“We need volunteers because there’s a lot of jobs that we need done on race day, like we need people to be there at tables for registration,” Marty Minogue, 2014 graduate and member of the Police Explorers, said. “We also need people to help out with timing for people that want to know their time. We also need people to tell the runners where to go, to cheer people on, to be on the corners saying like, ‘Go that way,’ and ‘Good job,’ and stuff like that. So we need as many volunteers as we could get.”
Police explorers are a group of 14-21 year olds that help out in the community when needed. Minogue is organizing the whole event, such as setting up the course and getting each runner registered, but he still needs some help on the day of the race.
As well as donating time, people who want to participate can also donate money. All of the proceeds will be donated to Special Olympics.
“There is a website with race information where people can sign up for the run, volunteering, or donating,” Minogue said. “You can donate any amount you want, you can show your name or go anonymous, and then you can add a comment and just donate, which goes straight to our bank account.”
Online registration for the event ends April 15, but people who want to participate can still sign up on the day of the race. Regardless of when people sign up, Minogue believes this event will be one for the books.
“I am looking forward to everybody getting together because there are going to be a lot of other explorers there meeting people’s families, too,” Minogue said. “People in the Police Department haven’t met any of our families, and it’s going to be really cool to see other explorers, too. I just want this to be as successful as possible and raise the most money as possible for a good cause.”
