Orchestra set to perform spring concert

Update: The orchestra concert has been postponed to Wednesday, April 1.

Orchestra will be springing into the new season with a performance this Thursday night in the PAC at 7pm.

The orchestra will start the night by playing some classical songs, such as “Symphony Number 8 in B Minor” and “Finlandia”. These songs were difficult at first, according to Carly Spaulding, junior viola player, but it was nothing the group could not overcome.

“We’ve been practicing everyday 6th period,” Spaulding said. “Basically, we go through each song, and we go through different excerpts and sections that are harder for us. We also have sectionals each week where each section gets together and goes through their specific parts without the whole orchestra, so that really helps.”

The sectionals the group goes through are smaller groups of the same set of instruments that come in for individual practice. Another way some of these musicians, including Spaulding, prepare for their performances are private lessons to fine tune specific skills.

“I run through the songs and work on the harder excerpts and measures by myself, and I also have a private teacher [that I meet with] once a week,” Spaulding said. “[I’ve been trying to] master the hard measures that are really fast pace with a lot of 16th notes in it. But there’s always room for improvement.”

With all of this preparation, Spaulding looks forward to seeing all of the hard work pay off and says the show will be one you will not want to miss.
