Bare Voices, Blue Notes, and Chamber Strings holiday concert tonight
Bare Voices, Blue Notes, and Chamber Strings will be holding their third annual holiday concert held today, December 16, at 7:30pm in the Performing Arts Center.
“This concert shows a wide variety of talent in our school. It’s more than just singing or playing an instrument” Angela Fortune, Blue Notes director and fine arts department chair, said. “Bare Voices sings a capella, Blue Notes sings and dances, and Chamber Strings plays lots of different types of music.”
There will be a large assortment of music played at this concert. The groups will be performing classical music like Beethoven to more modern holiday music such as Last Christmas and a diverse assortment of holiday music, said Fortune.
“Since this concert is on a smaller scale, it allows the groups more playing time that wouldn’t be attainable during the normal holiday concerts,” said Serge Penksik, orchestra director. “This concert also offers the audience a different experience since they will be hearing from many different types of ensembles.”
The goal of this concert is to recognize groups that are often forgotten about because each group is within a small range of 16-30 students, Fortune said.
“The concert was a collaborative idea among Mr. Juknelis, Ms. Fortune, and I because we still wanted to give each group a chance to be seen and heard,” Penksik said, “since they aren’t as well known and do not get as many opportunities to play.”
All of the students involved put in a lot of work outside of school for this concert, whether that means attending an extra sectional or meeting after school regardless of what group they’re in, Fortune said.
They do this because every member loves music and wants to improve, Penksik said.
“Chamber Strings meets every Wednesday after school and most of the members put in extra practice outside of school on top of being in another orchestra,” Sarah Miller, senior, said.
Miller has been in Chamber Strings for four years and said there has been a lot of preparation going into this concert.
Due to all this preparation and that fact that these are audition groups, both Penksik and Fortune have high expectations for their groups at this upcoming concert.
“I really hope many LZHS students will come out to support their fellow classmates and all the hard work that has been put into this concert,” Penksik said. “It’s going to be a great concert, one they definitely will not regret attending.”
