During the stressful finals week, dress up days can be a great opportunity for students to bond together over school spirit. During this final stretch of school, students have the option to dress up from Wednesday, December 11th to Tuesday, December 17th. Greta Roscoe, junior student council executive, shares information about this week before break.
“[The themes] started Wednesday [this past] week, and they [will] end on Tuesday before finals[…] Wednesday is green versus pink, which was wicked themed. Thursday is winter white, Friday is ugly sweaters, Monday is pajama day, and Tuesday is color wars. For that, seniors are green, juniors are pink, sophomores are blue, and freshmen are red,” Roscoe said.
There are a variety of fun themes that creative students participate in, and many of them want to be involved in deciding those themes. According to Roscoe, students have a chance to be involved.
“In the past, we would think of ideas at our meeting, and then we would have everyone in Student Council vote on their top choices. Then, we would get approval from the school,” Roscoe said. “But this time, we sent out a Google form a little bit ago so that students could fill out and give their ideas. So then we took from those ideas, so we had more students participating than in the past.”
While many students fill out the form that is sent out, many want to experience the part of actually deciding on creative themes that students will enjoy. However, as stated by Roscoe, students are able to apply to be on student council.
“We take applications at the beginning of the year. Usually, you fill out an application in the main office, and then we’ll look through those and you have to get two teacher recommendations. After that, if you’re accepted for an interview, the exec board and sponsors interview you, and usually results are posted by the end of the week. This happens at the beginning of the year,” Roscoe said.
Being on Student Council can be an exciting experience for those who want to participate in school spirit. However, doing these activities that Student Council sets up can also be a fun experience for the students as well.
“I love the Student Council. It’s very fun and I love the dress up days,” Roscoe said. “Everyone has a lot of work during finals week, and it’s the end of the semester, so it’s hard. It’s just something fun that people can participate in.”
