What is UCLZ all about?
The United Christians of Lake Zurich is one of the many clubs at LZ; however, not many people know it exists.
The mission statement for the club is: “UCLZ exists to construct a community where Christians are united, alive, and growing as they radiate the love of Christ at our school. UCLZ welcomes everyone regardless of their religious affiliations.”
United Christians of Lake Zurich (UCLZ) encourages anyone who wants to join to get involved, even if they are not Christian. However, the club has a hard time getting people involved because people do not know about it.
“I’m not sure about the word Christian, but [the] posters [we make to spread awareness for the club] can’t say Jesus or Christ,” Casey Rhew, senior and president of UCLZ, said. “As for people not knowing about the club, we have been making announcements and we made t-shirts, so hopefully when we wear them it will raise some awareness for the club.”
The club wants people to know that there is a safe place to talk about religion in the school with peers who support it, according to Rhew.
“[The purpose of this club] is to give Christians a place to come together and serve the community while increasing your faith,” Nikki Skoby, freshman in UCLZ, said.
Rhew said some of the topics of discussion at the meetings are reading Scripture or making Christmas cards for people in prison. She also said people should join because they can support their faith and hanging out with friends.
“It’s not every week, so it doesn’t take up a lot of time,” Skoby said. “It’s also a very relaxed, comfortable place to talk about our faith. Also, we do small ways of volunteering so you don’t have to get hours or anything.”
There are no requirement for this club, and it is a great way to get involved in school and faith at the same time, according to Rhew.
