Thirty three teams laced up their shoes and showed off their jump shots in the first ever Ball Gives Life 3 on 3 tournament, which took place Monday night to fundraise for Charity Bash.

The club raised over $550 for the Alexander Leigh Center for Autism, and though the tournament was the club’s first event, Alvin Pham, Ball Gives Life co-president, believes it was still a big success.

“I thought the tournament went really well. We had a great turnout of teams and we also had a lot of people who came just to watch, which was cool,” Pham said. “There were about a hundred kids playing, and our scrimmages usually have about forty people, so the turnout was more than what we expected.”

The tournament had both a winners and losers bracket in order to guarantee every team played in at least two games, but at the end of the night seniors Nick Penny, Karl Gerlach, and Cameron Long were the tournament’s first champions.

“It was great being able to play with all my friends and against friends no matter what grade they are in,” Ryan Kutsor, sophomore participant, said. “I would definitely play in another tournament for Ball Gives Life.”

While Pham says it was exciting watching so many teams compete at once, his favorite part of the tournament extended past the basketball court,

“My personal favorite part was seeing all of those people at our event because it showed that all of the hard work we put into making the tournament happen really did pay off,” Pham said. “We’re going to try and have another tournament in the springtime, but if that doesn’t work out, we’ll definitely have one next year for Charity Bash.”
