Last Dance

Saturday marked seniors’ last Homecoming dance, but for freshmen their first. Homecoming is a tradition the school has every year, but the experience is different for every grade.

“It was sad because those are some of the best memories, like going to dances with your friends and getting asked to Homecoming,” said Kelly Beigl, senior, reflecting on her last Homecoming dance. “It was definitely bittersweet.”

Even though seniors had experience with the annual dance, this year still offered new experience: the dance was in the field house for the first time in school history.

“[The dance being in the field house] changed the atmosphere a lot. I thought it was more fun, there was more room and people were less cramped and it wasn’t as hot,” Beigl said. “The way they had the DJ booth set up was also a lot better.”

The changes from last year’s dance didn’t matter as much to the students who have never been to a high school dance, according to freshmen. As first year students, they didn’t know what to expect.

“I thought Homecoming was really fun. It was fun to be around my friends and go out to dinner. It was different from middle school dances because there were a lot more people and they decorated a lot more,” Meghan Fitzgerald, freshman, said.

Although the night was filled with mixed feelings for some, Beigl’s “favorite part was dancing for sure. I thought the DJ was a lot better this year and they played really good songs,” she said.

Homecoming dances may be over for the seniors, but for the freshmen, the tradition has just begun. Even Fitzgerald says she definitely “plans on going next year.”
