Unify the Student Section, Unify Student Council

Student Council meets in Small Auditorium one morning to discuss this year’s events and interviews done for recruits this week. Rhew is “excited to be included in the interview process for the first time on Friday.”

Students are spilling out of the Student Section and into Student Council.

There are more applicants this year for Student Council than in years past, according to junior Kaylnn Rhew, Student Council secretary, a situation she attributes to an expanding student Section.

“I definitely think we’re changing for the better this year.  With having the underclassmen feel like they’re part of the school, I think that there are definitely a lot of underclassmen wanting to join Student Council so they can plan events that they get to be a part of too,” Rhew, said.

The high number of applicant turnout this year was unexpected, Rhew said.  Student Council had about twenty more applicants than last year, some of which are being interviewed on September 4.

“You have to go through a process to become a member and that’s what we’re going through right now,” Christopher Bennett, one of the sponsors of Student Council, said.  It’s a conversation between all of us and there’s about seven in the [interview] room.  We [make the decisions] at the end of the day, not right after the interview.  It’s an extremely difficult process.”

Rhew states that Student Council wants to recruit people that truly “have interests in making the school better.”

“We are looking for people that are involved, that have been involved in the past, people that have had leadership positions or have shown leadership ability, and then we are looking for people that are outgoing and look like they’d be comfortable speaking in front of a group of people,” Bennett said.

Though not everyone who applies can be admitted into the club, Bennett encourages people to try again the following year if they do not make the cut the previous year.

“We try to have room so that people can be added as the year goes on [and], like I said, if there are sixty people trying out and then there are only twenty spots, then we have to turn away a lot of really good people,” Bennett said.  “We hope that maybe they will consider applying the following year though,”

Not only does Student Council help with Homecoming, Charity Bash, and blood drives, they also want to reach their goal of making the school a positive and welcoming environment.

“In my opinion, if students are happy when they wake up in the morning coming to Lake Zurich High School, then I think that makes them better students and it makes the school environment that much more fun,” Bennett said.  “I think that our job [as Student Council] is to make sure that the kids enjoy coming here everyday.”
